Wisconsin Dells 2017- Day 2

February 14, 2018 0 Comments
Hey there friends! We spent 4 fabulous days in the Wisconsin Dells! Today I am going to be talking about day two. Be sure to check out days onethree, and four!

On Day 2, we really just did whatever our little hearts wanted! We had a general idea of what we wanted to do, but unlike our other vacations, we weren't constrained to a schedule. This is bad and good in many ways. My kids and I thrive on some sort of schedule or routine, and my husband's anxiety is worse without one.

The kids woke up about the usual time. We ate breakfast in the room. Our hotel gave us free passes to Noah's Ark Waterpark, the largest in the country. However, even for August, it was a bit chilly in the mornings. We decided we'd wait until the afternoon to see if it warmed up.

We still had the discount books, and we toyed with the Riverside & Great Northern Railroad. We had a BOGO Free adult coupon and Nolan was free, so we might as well! They didn't open until 9:30 and the train left at 10, so we cruised the strip again. When we got there, we viewed their toy shop. I found little train wooden letters. They were only $3.50. I had seen some online before for two or three times that, so I decided to get the boys their first initial. I would have loved to get their full first names, but hadn't budgeted for that. After a few minutes of checking that out, it was time to board the train. It is a small little train, but such a lovely ride. Both kids enjoyed it, but Liam especially.

After we were done, it was around 11 and we were getting hungry for lunch. We were so overwhelmed by where to eat. It's hard enough sticking to your budget on vacation, but trying to find vegan friendly places can be challenging. We decided to eat at Pizza Pub. They had an all you can eat lunch buffet. It featured an over 50 item salad bar, along with unlimited pasta, pizza dessert, and pizza. They had a veggie pizza and I'm sure they could have made it without cheese, but we pretty much stuck to the salad and pasta. Kyle ate probably four plates and the kid's and I had two each. We also all got dessert, their apple pie pizza. With our coupon, Liam's meal was free, and Nolan was free as well. We all got water to drink. We were completely stuffed and happy they were so accommodating to our restrictions.

After that, it was warming up quite a bit. We decided to go back and get ready for the water park and digest a bit.

This may seem silly, since the Dells are considered the waterpark capital of the world, but we aren't big waterpark people. It just seems really overwhelming for us. All the bathing suits, towels, sunblock. Then you have all the people crammed into a smaller space. I think it just gives us all anxiety. Since it was included in our stay, we planned on not stressing about it too much. We would go, have some fun for an hour or two, and bail. We did have to pay for parking, but the tickets were free.

This next part may be cringe worthy, but we only went to one spot of the largest waterpark. I'm sorry, but even in their "slower" season, when it was barely 70 degrees, it was still crowded! The entrance we came in was right next to the kids area, and that's where we stayed! Liam had tons of fun. There was a decent sized water slide and he went on it, probably, 10 times! First with Kyle, then eventually by himself. Nolan enjoyed some of it, but anytime something sprayed him, he got very upset. It would be extremely warm one minute, then the sun would disappear and it'd be freezing! Nolan had fun for maybe 30 minutes, then he and I retreated to our beach chairs under towels the rest of the time. Liam continued in the pool and slide. He and Kyle explored for a bit. Some areas of the park were closed, so they ended up coming back for a few minutes, before we decided we were done. Low and behold by the exits, there was a Dole Whip kiosk! I could have died! Not only do they give you that nostalgia of our favorite place ever (Disney World), but the pineapple soft serve is vegan! UM, YES! Sign us up! We got two, for all of us to share & they were giant! For 4.99, we could have all shared one! After we finished our treats, we headed back to our motel. We didn't even bother with naps. Liam rarely takes them, and Nolan refused to sleep on the bed when we laid him down. Of course though, he did fall asleep in the car.

We got back, showered, changed, and attempted to recharge our batteries. It was mostly Kyle napping, me watching TV, and trying to keep the kids from being too wild. We ate dinner there, just some peanut butter sandwiches, chips, fruit, and veggies. Then we headed our for our next adventure!

Our hotel also included Khalari Indoor Amusement Park. It was actually for each night of our stay! Had I realized that, we probably wouldn't have done knuckleheads the night before, and gone there both nights. I though that maybe there wouldn't be much for the kids. We had watched videos and there only appeared to be a few rides.

There was tons for all of us! We were all able to do the Ferris Wheel & Merry-go-Round. Liam & I did a small, yet wild rollercoaster. He also did the Vortex Tunnel probably 5 times! He & Kyle then did go-karts. They had a ropes course for small kids that Liam enjoyed.  We played a small round of mini golf. This did not go as well. Some of the things Liam really struggles with are impulsiveness, patience, and self-control. I'm not sure if it was just the fact he was getting tired or his issues, but we had to cut the game short. Kyle ended up doing the adult ropes course. We planned on coming back a different day, where I could do it too, but that didn't end up happening.

We headed back to the hotel & got ready for bed, it  had been a big, exciting day! After the kids fell asleep, Kyle got us some "grown up drinks" and we enjoyed spending some time together at our outdoor seating. Then we headed in for bed.

Wisconsin Dells 2017- Day 3

February 14, 2018 0 Comments
Hey there friends! We spent 4 fabulous days in the Wisconsin Dells! Today, I am going to be talking about day three. Be sure to check out days onetwo, and four!

Day 3 is where it gets crazy you guys! We knew we wanted to do Devil's Lake State Park. It is the most popular state park in Wisconsin. We figured we'd go, spend an hour or so there, and go do some other things. That didn't happen at all!

We took our time getting ready that morning. We ate breakfast in our room, the boys watched a few minutes of TV, and we got ready. The park was about 30 minutes from our motel. We had passed a thrift store on the way and decided to stop in for a bit.  Then, we headed to the park. It was $11 to park for the whole day (good thing we didn't pay by the hour, believe me!). I had read to check out the South Shore. The north gets very busy and the south had the same lake and little beach. The boys had fun exploring the sand, but the water was much too cold that early. We decided we'd take a little hour or so hike and head out. This is where the story goes completely crazy.

We had followed this trail. Kyle also had an app that told whether trails were easy, moderate, or difficult. The trail we picked was easy. It appeared, you just had to climb these rocks to get there.  We started climbing the rocks. We saw many families with small children, as well as pets, climbing. Including an Amish family! Nolan was in the Tula and Liam was doing awesome climbing. What we thought to be a small little trail to get to the easy trail, turned out to be a hard trail, with only one way down. By the time we got up to the top, Liam was tired, rightfully so. We had brought our toddler carrier and I was fully prepared to wear him down. Until I started down this rock mountain. I went into a full blown panic attack. There was no way I could climb down this mountain, with a 35lb 5-year-old strapped to my back, without us both dying! In all seriousness, it panics me just to think about it. I was frustrated, embarrassed that we hadn't paid more attention to the trail we had followed, and scared to death we'd be stranded up here forever. We eventually found another way down. We had to walk the entire perimeter of the park to get back this way. Okay, fine by me, as long as I don't have to risk falling down a mountain with my baby!

The easier walk back ended up being 5 miles! The walk itself wasn't nearly as difficult as the way back up or down would have been, but it was long, as you can guess. At this point, the kids needed to be carried, there was no way around it. Luckily we had lunch, but had forgotten our waters in the car. This had me even more panic stricken. Now, it sounds ridiculous. There were people around, we had a working cell phone, all that, but when you're scared, in an element, and situation like that, it doesn't seem ridiculous at all. I'm also grateful we went so early in the morning. We finally made it to the North Shore. We got some waters, had a snack, and used the bathroom.  We prepared for the final two miles to the south shore. Now that I had seen civilization and realized we would not be dying, those last two miles were not only enjoyable, but absolutely stunning. Honestly, I wish we had been more careful and informed. We went into it very naively. Walking around here at home isn't much, as most trails are only a few miles combined. It definitely made us reconsider blindly following trails in the future with two small kids in tow. In the end, we view it as a blessing in disguise. The mountain was so amazing at the top and the last leg of the journey was worth it all. I just wish we could erase that middle part!

This all took around 5.5 hours. Much more time than we thought or had planned on. We were all exhausted and ready for dinner. We went back to the hotel, showered, changed, and headed out. We were finally able to eat at the Cheeze Factory! Don't let the name confuse you, it is an all vegan restaurant! It's a bit pricey, but it was part of the push that helped us decide to go to the Dells. We all got an entree (aside from Nolan who ate a PB sandwich) and dessert. Our bill was around $60 including tip, which is extremely high compared to what we usually spend, but very much worth the splurge. We also had planned for it, which helped our budget.

Since we had been at the park so much later than planned, after dinner we didn't have time for much else. We had thought about hitting Kalahari again, but now there was no way. Our motel had a sweet kiddie pool, with a water slide. We realized it was heated, so we let the kids go for about half an hour. Honestly, I wish we had realized that sooner because I think that was their favorite part. We never saw anyone in that one, just the larger one, so they had it all to themselves. After we were done, we got ready for bed, and all fell fast asleep!

Wisconsin Dells 2017- Day 1

February 14, 2018 0 Comments
Hey there friends! We spent 4 fabulous days in the Wisconsin Dells! Today I am going to be talking about day one. Be sure to check out days two, three, and four!

Driving from our house to the Dells is about 5.5 hours. We knew we'd be stopping at a dairy free ice cream shop and grabbing lunch & gas in between there as well. We set our alarm for 7 AM and planned to leave sometime between 8-9 AM.

We picked up the rental car the night before. This could have easily been a place to save a ton of money, but after driving our van to Disney twice (15 hours one way), our 11-year-old vehicle was feeling it. We keep it in good shape, but it seems like after each trip, it would need something replaced every few months, sometimes large repairs. We figured we'd get something a little smaller, that got better gas mileage & save some wear and tear on our car. Paying some extra money now, we felt, could save us some large repairs in the future. We decided anytime we have to drive for more than 4 hours one way, we will just rent a car.

Kyle & I had done most of our packing the night before while the kids slept. We just needed to pack up some last minute items: chargers, toothbrushes, blankets, etc. We took our time. We had a general idea that check in time was 3pm and we wanted to do some things when we got there, but we weren't sticking to a strict schedule.

We had planned on stopping at a grocery store once we got to the Dells, but we couldn't find Nolan's sippy cup. We only have one (that might be for another post), so I ran to Walmart to grab a new one. While I was there, I just decided to grab some of the things we needed for the week, instead of stopping again later. I got some Almond Milk, Coconut Milk, grapes, carrots, gum, cheerios, paper plates, bowls, & utensils. We had gotten diapers, bread, peanut butter, chips, pretzels, & vegan cheese its at the grocery that week. Luckily, the milk was boxed so we didn't need to refrigerate it until we opened it. Our room had a fridge & microwave. We also brought a small knife and cutting board.

For the car ride, I packed very minimally. We normally would have our DVD player. While I don't like the kids watching it the entire time, we normally bring a handful of shows or movies for the ride. That on top of other things, like books, games, etc tends to overflow & overwhelm very quickly. Knowing this was a compact car, I packed Liam's backpack with some things for him and my backpack for some things for me. For the kids, I packed two board books for Nolan, Curious George Treasury Book for Liam, both of their cups & blankets, a candy spinner (similar to this, it was an Easter gift that comes with candy, and can be spun and played with after), a small Mickey toy, a pack of playing cards, and an unopened Lightning McQueen. In my bag, I packed a book for me, a crosswords puzzle book, 3 audiobooks, and 4 kid CDs. We listened to all of the CDs in probably an hour or so, and got through 1 audio book on the way there. I also finished my book.

We ended up hitting traffic about an hour and a half into our trip, long before we even got to Chicago. There was some sort of accident, mixed with construction. We were in that, barely moving, for about an hour. After that, we all had to go to the bathroom, so we had our first stop.

A little later, it was getting close to lunch time. We grabbed some Taco Bell. We got a few things and ate alongside our snacks we had brought with us.

One thing I regret, is going the route we did. It was the shorter route, but with the traffic jam, and the excessive tolls, we were probably an hour and a half later and $10 poorer. The other way we considered going said it has tolls as well, so we just went the shorter way. Never again!

We made it to Madison and went to the Chocolate Ice Cream Shoppe. It was affordable & vegan, so we were very happy! We loved driving through downtown Madison. It is a college town, so it is very hip. We saw lots of consignment stores, neat parks, etc. We would have loved to have spent more time there. Maybe next time!

Going there, we were still about an hour away from the Dells, so we got back on the road. Since they are an hour behind us, we got to our hotel at about 3:30, so it all actually worked out perfectly!  We stayed at the All Star Inn & Suites. I will probably do a full review and link it here later, but we were very pleased!

After we got all unpacked and settled, we changed clothes and hit the strip! We were down the street from the Downtown Dells or Riverfront area, and not too far from where all the action of the strip was. With our stay, we got two different coupon books. We decided to eat at Sprecher's Restaurant and Pub. We had a free appetizer with two entrees. Kyle got one of their craft sodas (which is mostly why we went). The boys shared an order of pretzels, I got the Southwest Salad with no cheese or chicken, & Kyle got a Roasted Cauliflower & Quinoa Burger with no cheese. Now, we might be the worst vegans ever, but we don't ask a lot of questions on vacation. We know animal products are not good for our bodies, so we avoid them as much as possible. However, it's hard enough eating out, let alone several times a week, like we do on trips. So we preview the menu before hand, use our best judgement, and try not to fret over it too much.

After we finished, we decided to go to Knuckleheads. We went to the Trampoline Park there. We have one similar at home, but haven't been for a couple of years. We brought our socks, so were able to save that way. Somehow, they charged us for 3 people, instead of 4. It was $48 just for 3 of us! So we decided, Kyle would just watch. Honestly, I wish I hadn't paid for myself either. I love trampolines and had tons of fun, but after 30 minutes, I was pretty much done. The boys had an absolute blast though.

After that, it was about 8 o clock their time, which meant 9 our time! Our kids usually go to bed about 7-8. Our hotel had a playground and swing set. The kids still had tons of energy, so we hit that when we got back. After that, we did baths and bed. We were ready for day 2!

Wisconsin Dells 2017- Day 4

February 14, 2018 0 Comments
Hey there friends! We spent 4 fabulous days in the Wisconsin Dells! Today, I am going to be talking about day four. Be sure to check out days onetwo, and three.

Day 4 was a bit of catch up. We knew we wanted to shop at the Downtown Dells, but with the park fiasco, we didn't have a choice but to do it the morning before we left.

For some reason, the kids were up at 6:30! (Kill me now). This actually turned out to be good. We usually pack up the night before, but we were so tired, we didn't bother. Check out was at 11. We initially planned on just taking our time, maybe swimming again, hitting the playground, and then leaving right after check out. We decided to pack up, get ready, check out, and get some breakfast before the shops opened at 10. So that's what we did. We all got ready, got packed, and checked out. We then headed to Denny's for breakfast. I don't like eating at chains at places where there are lots of fun, local restaurants. I had heard good things about several, but didn't feel there would be much for us to eat. I didn't want to pay the same price and not get my belly full. At Denny's, the kids ate oatmeal. Kyle & I got the veggie breakfast skillet with no egg whites and a side of tortillas. We had a 20% off coupon from the rewards club, so that helped too! It was so filling and good.

Once we were done, it was about time for the shops to open. We get a magnet from every vacation we take. My best friend, Lindsey, is our unofficial dog sitter and also has a birthday coming up. We decided to get these two souvenirs and explore. We had fun looking at everything. We spent about two hours doing that, then took a stroll down the Riverfront. We then headed to the car for the journey home.

Before we left, we stopped at the dollar store. I got the kids a little toy each, just something new to play with for the journey home. We also grabbed some fries on our way out of town.

We decided to go home to other way this time and holy cow! Not only was there one toll vs six, but no traffic the whole way! We will definitely go that way from now on anytime we head that direction. The boys were much better on the trip home than on the way there. They both took a solid nap, enjoyed their new toy, and had a snack. Kyle and I enjoyed listening to our audiobook on the way home. It took almost the entire time, so it kept us good and occupied.

We stopped for gas, coffee,  bathroom breaks, and eventually dinner. We got home around bedtime. We brought everything in and put most of it away. Then we both went to bed, since Liam had a soccer game the following day.

Overall, we had some very tense, scary moments, but in the end, we had a really wonderful time. It was nice being able to take a trip and having fun together. Most of our trips are ones we plan and save for for at least a year or so. I wouldn't mind taking some more like this.

Week 12- Water Unit

October 07, 2017 0 Comments

Hey there homeschool mamas! Welcome to week 12 of our Kindergarten Homeschool! I am so excited to show you what we've done and how it's going every week! If you're curious about our curriculum, my son, or our homeschool room, check out this post!

This week was our water unit. Luckily, it was a rainy week so the weather matched our theme! =D

We learned about the different States of Matter. Each day, we did a one of these sheets and did the various activities from our manual.

This week's Biblical concept was a bit difficult. "Jesus gives my spirit living water to drink." No surprise that Liam totally had it memorized by the end of the week. Sometimes he does better at remembering than I do!

He's been doing better at the blend ladder. He does have trouble forming them together, but I know that takes time.

He enjoyed the math sheet this week that worked with money. He went around all week writing prices on things with a post it note. It was pretty cute! =D

Books We Read: Make Way for Ducklings, Daisy Comes Home, The Story About Ping, and Follow the Water from Brook to Ocean

Liam also finished up his soccer season this week. He had a ton of fun! He already said he wants to play again next year, but not do baseball. That hurts my heart a bit, since I played for 18 years, but I'm excited he found something he enjoys and wants to stick with it! I'd like to get him into a winter activity. Maybe swim lessons or gymnastics. Something to get his energy out and interact with kids. We will see what he wants to do!

I can not believe we are almost to the halfway point of our school! It is flying by!

Week 11- Octopus Unit

September 30, 2017 0 Comments

Hey there homeschool mamas! Welcome to week 11 of our Kindergarten Homeschool! I am so excited to show you what we've done and how it's going every week! If you're curious about our curriculum, my son, or our homeschool room, check out this post!

Well, this was our first week back after an unexpected break. I had talked about Kyle's schedule changing. On September 10, I opened my etsy shop. I was surprisingly pretty busy. With all of the out of whack routine, our Dinosaur unit didn't go very well. We would be busy when Daddy was home, I'd work while the boys rested, then we'd do something else, and before we knew it, we had missed a day of school.  I was stressed out from working on my shop daily and still hadn't yet learned to manage doing it all. Then, Liam got sick last week. He had a stomach bug, so he wasn't feeling too hot for about 3 days. By the time he was better, it was mid week and we didn't really have a choice than to just start fresh the next week. Honestly, I am so glad we did. It allowed me to catch up on my orders, get my house in check, nail down a new schedule/routine to coincide with Kyle's schedule, and just gave us a break. I feel like we were just thrown into September & hadn't had time to catch our breath. Our next break was scheduled for next week, but we will just push through to the next one, since we took it early.

Anyways, onto our Octopus unit! Liam had fun learning about them this week! He loves the movie, Finding Dory. In the movie, there is an octopus named Hank who Dory befriends. There is some facts through out and Liam would recite them. It was great he could put two and two together!

He enjoyed the different activites this week. We learned about the different oceans by looking at our globe and coloring them on a map. He enjoyed our book. We did A House for Hermit Crab book and did this activity with it. We did this one to go with Swimmy.  He really loved making the octopus hand print and using salt for the ocean floor.

Books we read: Swimmy, A House for Hermit Crab, The Octopus, and Octopus

It was a great week back for schooling, that is for sure! We both enjoyed it, I had much more patience, and Liam was eager to learn.

We also took our first official field trip! We went with our homeschool group to the Apple Orchard & Pumpkin Patch. Always a fall activity we enjoy as a family. Kyle was off, so he got to come along. We learned how they pick apples. We were able to pick our own (and they were amazing by the way!). We then got to see how the apples were stored, washed, and sorted. We learned the different types of apples and which seasons they grow in. The kids got to enjoy some apple cider and cookies. We then took a hayride to the pumpkin patch. Once we arrived, we got to pick the pumpkin from the vine! I thought that was so cool! It's something I've never done before. After the tour, they got to climb the hay bale tower, jump on a jumbo jumping pillow, play in the sandbox, and play different games. Very fun & educational! We look forward to many more trips and meeting new friends! =D

Week 8- Turtle Unit

September 02, 2017 0 Comments

Hey there homeschool mamas! Welcome to week 8 of our Kindergarten Homeschool! I am so excited to show you what we've done and how it's going every week! If you're curious about our curriculum, my son, or our homeschool room, check out this post!

This week was a bit blah for our homeschool. Kyle's schedule got completely changed. I knew it might change eventually, but didn't anticipate it changing right when we got back from vacation. I didn't even have time to rearrange anything! Not only did this mess up our homeschool routine, but it also messed up our serving at church, photography sessions I had planned, taking both kids to Liam's therapy, etc. Just no bueno.

So, needless to say we were a bit out of the loop. Our first few days were okay, but by day 4, I was meal planning & Kyle had a meeting. We ended up having to go to 3 different stores (annoying much?) and rush home for dinner and soccer practice. It wasn't until laying Liam in bed, that I remembered, "we forgot to do school!". This was the first time we did this. To make matters worse, on day 5 we made plans out of town. No big deal, they were flexible plans, until we overslept, and yet again, didn't realize we still had school to do. Luckily, we had our two scheduled days off, to catch up!

This week was all about turtles! Green sea turtles are my favorite animals, so I may have gone a bit overboard.

I found another youtube video with our poem this week. Liam was a tad confused why Elsa was with Ariel and not Anna, but he loved the poem and I remember it from when I was younger!

We started out blend ladders this week. Liam liked them okay. He was having a tiny bit of trouble because he kept adding an extra letter onto what we were doing. For example, with "san" he kept adding a "duh" at the end, to make it sand because he is familiar with that word. He did love learning to read "sat" and even copied it onto his chalkboard!

He loved the Tortoise and the Hare story, but loved acting it out even more! He ran a couple of laps in the yard, then I added his daddy's shoes into the equation. He had to try to run with those. He kept saying, "wook, I'm a tortoise, I'm slow! That's funny, but I'm still going to win!"

He also moved like other animals. Not only was this great for his school, but also gave him that sensory input as well. Double win!

For some of the activities in our book, I opted for some others. He did a watercolor of a turtle, as well as a dab worksheet.

He did struggle a bit this week with his Biblical Concept, "I don't quit, I persevere". I can totally understand why, it's a large word. Luckily, I was able to relate to our vacation last week, when we climbed the big mountain. We wanted to quit, but we didn't, we pushed through and persevered. After the third day, he got it, and has weeks 3-8 memorized now! So proud of him!

We read so many books this week! As I said, they are my favorite, so I went kind of crazy. He learned the difference between turtles or tortoises, where they live, what makes them different, the parts of their body, how they hide from predators, etc. Normally we will read one during school each day, but since we picked out so many, we read some during school, and other's during meal time.

Books we read this week were: Turtles and Tortoises, Look Out For Turtles, The Tortoise and the Hare, Katy & the Big Snow, Mr. Putter & Tabby Run the Race, Sea Turtles, Emma's Turtle, and National Geographic's Book on Turtles.

Everyone's schedules were messed up from vacation, so little brother joined in once or twice!

I am so looking forward to starting fresh next week and nailing down a new routine! We all thrive, for different reasons, on a set routine!
